The Society has as its aim the futherance of interest in war-time postal history. It was founded in 1987 and now has around 70 members. The Society endeavours to obtain new information aboit the postal history of war-time Norway, and to make this available to collectors and postal historians through publications and articles in philatelic journals. The Society has its own members' periodical Norwegian War and Field Post Journal which is an important link between members and is a means of publicising the Society and its work. A free copy will be sent on request. The Society holds one or two meetings a year including the AGM. At these meetings there is a talk on various war-time postal history topics, members display some of their collections, and discussions take place on various aspects of the subjects on which Society members are working. There is also a postal auction. The yearly subscription fee is NOK 250,-. The Society would like to recruit new members who are interested in war-time mail. If this is your collecting interest, membership of the Society would be of invaluable help to you. If you would like to join, fill in the form below and send it in. Your membership card etc. will be sent by post as soon as you have been enrolled. |
What is war-time mail? In the field of collecting, this refers to censor mail and field post from both world wars. Naturally enough, most collectors are interested in Word War II. The years from 1940 to 1945 are an important part of Norway's more recent history, and we have still not recorded, nor indeed, do we know everything about it. This is especially true of postal history, with mail control and censorship of many kinds. For the soldier at the front, the field post was his link with family and friends. The study of field post numbers, cancellations, routes and administration is a major area of research which we have already explored. Field post in peace-time can also be an exciting and varied area to collect, not least because Norwegians form part of the United Nations peace-keeping forces around the world. Thus there are even more cancellations, and postal history to be studied. If you are interested in this large and excitig subject, you will certainly benefit from joining our Society. For further information, you may contact any member of the Committee. |
